Three families of Samuel Nadin,

The families of Samuel Naden I, Samuel Naden II, and Samuel Naden III, respectively great-grand-father, grand-father and father of Benjamin Naden Senior

At the 1861 Census, two Naden families are found on the same page 18 for the Town of Buxton, which means that they lived close to each other. The second Naden family is the one that interest us. On the first line we have Samuel Naden III, head, married, 30 years of age and thus born around 1831, Farm labourer, born in Langnor, Staffordshire. On the second we have Mary Naden, 32 years of age and thus born around 1829, born in Macclesfield, Cheshire. On the third and last line we find: Benjamin Naden, son, 5 years of age, born in Hollinsclough, Staffordshire around 1856. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Samuel Naden III had married Mary Ann Brindley at the Longnor Church on March 18th 1855. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

This child Benjamin Naden's age corresponds to that of Benjamin Naden Senior. It follows that most probably this is his family at the 1861 Census especially that his marriage certificate stated that his father was called Samuel Naden. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

At the 1841 Census, Samuel Naden III was 10 years old and so born around 1831. We find him with his parent's family living in Longnor. His father is Samuel Naden II, 35 years of age and thus born around 1806. He is an agricultural labourer. His mother Hannah Naden was also 35 years of age. His sister Elizabeth Naden, was 13 years of age and thus born around 1828, his other sister Mary Naden was 6 years of age and thus born around 1835 and another brother, Ambrose Nadin was a year old and so born around 1840. All were born in Longmor excepted the mother. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

At the 1881 Census, we find that Samuel Naden III was said to be 55 years old, which would make him born around 1826. His wife Mary Ann Naden is a char woman, 52(?) years old, which would make her born around 1829. They have a daughter, Jane Naden, 19 years old and so born around 1862, domestic servant. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

At the 1891 Census, he is 65 years old and so born around 1826 and still an Agricultural labourer. His wife Mary Ann Naden is 60 years old and so born around 1831. Their daughter Jane Naden is 30 years old and so born around 1860. She is single and still a domestic servant. A nurse child of three years of age also lives with them. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

We saw from the 1841 Census that Samuel Naden II was born in Longmor around 1806. Samuel Naden II had married on August 15th 1825 at the Church of St Michael and All Angels in East Sterndale, Derbyshire, Hannah Gould; unfortunately, the scanned copy of that Act is not available. He was born in 1806 according to the 1841 Census. His wife was the same age.

At the 1851 Census, Samuel Naden II is still an agricultural labourer, 45 years of age, and so born around 1806 and a widower. His son Ambrose Naden, 12 years old and so born around 1839, is still at school. His brother Ambrose Naden, also a widower, is 40 years old and so born around 1811 and an agricultural labourer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

His other children had either left home or had died. His wife had also died: he was a widower. His son Samuel Nadin III, then 20 years of age, is not found in that Census.

At the 1861 Census, Samuel Naden II is still an agricultural worker. He is remarried: his wife is Catherine Naden, born in 1809. His brother Ambrose Naden is still living with them. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Samuel Nadin II remarried with Catherine Mellor in September 1860 at the Church of St Peter, Alstonefield, Staffordshire as the Marriage Bans testify. (A Copy of those is found further down.)

At the 1871 Census, Samuel Naden II is also found. He lives with his wife Catherine Naden and his father-in-law Joseph Mellor, 83 years old and a widower. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Samuel Nadin I was baptized on the 20th of December 1780 in Longnor, Staffordshire, the son of Francis Naden. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Samuel Nadin I married in Repton, Derbyshire, on May 23rd 1803, Martha Oakden. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Samuel Nadin II was baptized on the 31st December 1803 in Repton, Derbyshire. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)His brother Ambrose Naden was born in Longnor Staffordshire in 1811. He lives in Allstonefield, Staffordshire in 1841 at the Census and dies in 1843 at Longnor.

Samuel Naden II was baptized on the 31st December 1803 in Repton, Derbyshire. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He married on the 15th August 1825 in Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire, Hannah Gould. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
