The family of George Kirby, father of Edward Kirby
We can try to trace Edward Kirby at the 1851 Census but not at the 1861 Census. At the 1851 Census, we find two families of Kirbys living next to each other. Both families are in carpentry and building. It is in the second family living at 29 Whithall Street, that we find him. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) There we find a family of eight, all born in Northampton King's Sutton:
- George Kerby, head, married, 43 years old, Carpenter and builder.
- Ann Kerby, wife, married, 40 years old;
- George Kerby, son, 19 years old, carpenter
- Alexander Kerby, son, 15 years old, carpenter
- Elizabeth Kerby, daughter, 13 years old
- Mary Kerby, daughter, 11 years old, at school
- Edward Kerby, son, 9 years old, at school .
- Thomas Kerby, 6 years old, born 1845, at school.
We have seen with the Baptism Act that Edward Kirby's father was George Kerby, born around 1808, and his mother's Christian name was Ann. Now we can see that she was born around 1811 in Northampton King's Sutton. The censuses said clearly that he was a Carpenter and Builder.
It is also possible to find out that George Kerby married at Kings Sutton on May 4th 1830 Ann Hall although the act itself is not available. The 1861 Census finds only the last two sons living at their parents. Edward Kerby is a carpenter and his brother Thomas Kerby was an agricultural worker. (Copy of this Act is found further down.)
As the Baptism Acts for the father and his children are all available, we can go a bit further than with the 1851 Census. We can build the following about the children:
- George Kerby was baptized on February 26th 1832 in the Parish Church of King's Sutton in the County of Northampton. (Copy of this Act is found further down.) He was living at home at the 1851 Census and was a carpenter. (Copy of this Act is found further down.) He might have married in the fourth quarter of 1869 Mary Ann Haynes.
