Linda Nadin in Oxford and her wedding |
Linda in OxfordI met Linda at the Oxford Chaplaincy which is housed in Bishop King's Old Palace, a place that dates from the time of Henry VIII. Both her and me used to stay for Mass around 6 pm. She would first go for tea which was served from 4 to 5 pm and I would arrive closer to 5:30 pm. We had a common friend, Thelma, whom I was spending some time with. I used to invite Thelma for supper and after some time, she would invite Linda to join us on occasion. Thelma left the Oxford scene for Ghana and wanted to be a nun. Shd also told Linda that she could have me as she was going away! I found two photos from before Linda and I started spending time together. Things got much more serious once I started seeing more of Linda. I tried to invite her for supper as often as possible and I found I had much more in common with her than with my previous girlfriend. My job at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montréal, Canada, started in August 1972. So I left Oxford in July of that year. I left Linda behind with great sadness. I soon decided to go back to Oxford during the Christmas school break so to be with her. It is at the very end of my stay that I finally found the courage to ask her to marry me. And she said yes! Our wedding was in Oxford, on 30th June 1973. We went on honeymoon to Paris, visiting Versailles and Chartres. We then came back to Oxford for a short time before we came back to Montréal, found an appartment and furnished it, all that during a heat wave! Not a nice way to settle in Montréal. But then, she found that we also had a dreadful winter... (To return to Neta Jean McTait Nadin in Birmingham, press HERE.)
