Charles L. Poyfair and his Family

Charles L. Poyfair was the son of Jeremiah Poyfair and of Ellen Flynn. He was born circa 1836.

The 1860 census finds him living at 6 Jackson Street, in Lockport, Niagara County, New York State, with his wife Margaret, 17 years of age, and a daugther Ida Poyfair, 1 year of age. He was then a House Painter. He became a machinist around 1863.

On June 9th, 1863, then 26 years of age, he was mustered in Lockport, Niagara County, New York State, as a private in Company F in the N. Y. Artillery. He was quicky promoted to sergeant. But on December 7th, 1863, he deserted from Fort Hamilton at N Y Harbor.

In 1870 he is found living with his step father Augustus Baldwin. No mention is made of either his wife or his daughter. He is still a machinist. For a look at that Census Report, press HERE.

In 1885, at the death of his mother, he was residing in Glensville, New York.

He, it seems, married Margaret Calise after July 1870. He does not seem to be found on the 1880 US Census.
