Family of Benjamin Nadin Senior

The family of Benjamin Nadin Senior and Sarah Ellen Salt, parents of Benjamin Nadin Junior

On the Sixth of January 1876 at the Parish Church of Ashburne in the County of Derby, Benjamin Nadin Senior, Bachelor, labourer, of age, living at Bostern Grange Ashburne, son of Samuel Nadin, labourer, married Sarah Salt, spinster, of age, servant, living at living at Bostern Grange Ashburne, daughter of Joseph Salt, farmer. (This Act is found further down.)

Benjamin Nadin Senior was the son of Samuel Nadin III and of Mary Ann Brindley. For more on the parents of Benjamin Nadin senior, press HERE.

Sarah Ellen Salt was the daughter of Joseph Salt and of Alice Gould. For more on the parents of Sarah Ellen Salt, press HERE.

We fortunately find their entries in the four Censuses which follow their marriage, as well as quite a few for their children. This provides us with quite a lot of information on them.

The information found from the censuses

  1. At the 1881 Census, Benjamin Nadin (senior) is married and 26 years of age. He is an agricultural labourer, born Staffordshire Hollindough. His wife, Sarah E. Nadin, is 27 years of age. She was born in Staffordshire Elkstone. They had three children, all born at Crowtiston Lodge, in Derbyshire: Thomas Nadin, son, 4 years of age; Alice Nadin, daughter, 3 years of age; and John W. Nadin, son, 1 year of age. They lived at Glutton Bridge, Bakewell. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

  2. At the 1891 Census, Benjamin Nadin (senior) is married and is 36 years of age. He is an agricultural labourer, born Staffordshire Hollingsburg. His wife, Sarah E. Nadin, is 37 years of age. She was born in Staffordshire Elkstone. They had six children at home. (The first two children were not home.) John William Nadin, son, was 11 year of age. Walter Nadin, son, was 9 years of age. Benjamin Nadin junior, son, was 7 years of age. All three were at school. Mary Nadin, daughter, was 5; Ellen Nadin, daughter, was 4; and finally Harry Nadin, son, was 2 years of age. (His Christian name was mistakenly written Henry) They lived at Crowdycote, Bakewell, West Derbyshire. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Their oldest child, Thomas Nadin, 14 years of age, single, was an agricultural labourer at Bakewell. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Their eldest daughter Alice Nadin, is not found.

  3. At the 1901 Census, Benjamin Nadin (senior) is married and is 46 years of age. He is an agricultural labourer, born Staffordshire Hollingsburg. His wife, Sarah Ellen Nadin, is 47 years of age. She was born in Staffordshire Elkstone. They had two children at home. Harry Nadin, son, was 12 year of age. Ada Nadin, daughter, was 6; both were attending school. They lived at Crowdycote, Bakewell, West Derbyshire. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Their first child, Thomas Nadin, 24 years of age, single, was still an agricultural labourer at Bakewell. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Their second child, Alice Nadin, 23 years of age, single, was a servant at Bakewell. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Their third child, John William Nadin, single, 21 years of age, was a boarder in Buxton, working for a Railroad. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Their fourth child, Walter Nadin, is not found. Their fifth child, Benjamin Nadin junior, single, 18 years of age, and their sixth child, Mary Nadin, single, 16 years of age were together working on a farm for a widow and his son, in Bakewell. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Their seventh child, Sarah Ellen Nadin, single, 25, seems to have been a maid in the house of a Bank Director. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    On October 1st, 1902, Walter Nadin, then 21 years of age, bachelor, Brewery man, married in the Parish Church of Buxton Ann Wardle, spinster, daughter of Mark Wardle, Poultry dealer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    On December 28th, 1905, Sarah Ellen Nadin, then 19 years of age, spinster, married in the Parish Church of Earl Sterndale Hugh Ernest Cope, son of Charles Cope. Among those who signed the registry were Walter Nadin, Alice Nadin and Mary Nadin. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

  4. At the 1911 Census, Benjamin Nadin (senior) is still married and is 56 years of age. He is an labourer in Lime Works. His wife, Sarah Ellen Nadin, is 57 years of age. She had ten children in all, nine alive and one dead. They had two children at home: Harry Nadin, son, 22 years of age, also labourer in Lime Works, and Ada Nadin, just married to Levi Willcox, also labourer in asphalt and lime works. Finally was living with them William Ashley, boarder, single, also labourer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    At that same census, a Thomas Nadin, 34 years of age, born at Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire, is found at Blackheath, London South East. He is a police constable. He has been married for 10 years. His wife is now Ellen Nadin, 40 years of age. They have had three children: Ada Nadin, daughter, 9 years of age, born in London Bermondsey, May Nadin, daughter, 7 years of age, born in London Lee, South East, and finally Alma Madin, son, 5 years of age, also born in London Lee, South East.     The second child, Alice Nadin, 33 years of age, single, was a domestic servant at the Thomas Shimwell farm. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    The third child, John William Nadin, 31 years of age, had married a woman now known as Mary Elizabeth Nadin, 29 years of age. They had been married for 8 years. They had had three children, but only two were still alive: John Thomas Nadin, 6 years of age, and James Ralph Nadin, 4 years of age. He was a Stationary Engine Driver for the Dowlow Lime & limestone Company. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    The fourth child, Walter Nadin, was 29 years of age. His wife, Ann Nadin, was 33 years of age and born at Staff Longnor. They had been married 9 years, had five children born and still alive. Their first child, Emma Nadin, a daughter, was 14 years of age and born in Staff Longmor. She was a domestic. Their second child, Roseina Nadin, also a daughter, was 7 years of age. Their third child, Walter Nadin, a son, was 6 years old. The last two children were both born in Buxton, Derbyshire and both attending school. Their fourth child, Annie Nadin, a daughter, was 4 years old and born in Buxton, Derbyshire. Their last child, Lillie Nadin, a daughter, was 2 years old and born in Bradford Manchester. Walter Nadin was a motor man for the Manchester Corporation.

    The fifth child, Benjamin Nadin Junior, was 27 years of age and a policeman with the Metropolitan Police. His wife, Hetty Esther Nadin, was 24 years of age and born in Derbyshire. They had been married 2 years and had had 2 children, both alive: Benjamin Nadin III, a year old, born in Devonport, and Ada Nadin, 5 months, born in Devon.     The sixth child, Mary Nadin, was 25 years of age, single, and working as domestic on a farm in Buxton.

    The seventh child, Sarah Ellen Cope, was 25 years of age and her husband, Hugh Ernest Cope was 26. He was a joiner, working on his own account. They had been married 6 years, had 4 children, all living: Arthur Cope, son, 5 years of age, born in Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire; James Cope, son, 2 years of age (?), born in Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire; Ethel Cope, daughter, 2 years of age, born in Alstonfied, Staffordshire and finally William Cope, son, 11 months, also born in Astonfield, Staffordshire.     On May 28th, 1913 at the Parish Church of Earl Sterndale, Harry Nadin, 25 years of age, bachelor, quarryman, son of Benjamin Nadin, quarry man, married Ada Heathcote, 23 years of age, spinster, daughter of John Heathcote, Quarry manager. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)




TO SUM UP: the Family of Benjamin Nadin Senior and Sarah Ellen Salt, Parents of Benjamin Nadin Junior

From these four census and some other acts, we can construct the following family, which includes nine children. We have also included extra information based on the 1939 Census and on Baptism or Marriage Acts found further down.

On the Sixth of January 1876 at the Parish Church of Ashburne in the County of Derby, Benjamin Nadin Senior, Bachelor, labourer, of age, living at Bostern Grange Ashburne, son of Samuel Nadin, labourer, married Sarah Salt, spinster, of age, servant, living at living at Bostern Grange Ashburne, daughter of Joseph Salt, farmer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Benjamin Nadin Senior was born around 1855 in Staffordshire Hollingsdough. His wife Sarah Ellen Salt was born in Staffordshire Elkstone around 1854. They had three children at the time, all born in Cronkstone Lodge, Derbyshire. They lived at 54 Crowdycote Derbyshire at the 1891 Census. They had lived in Derbyshire, in Stockport Cheshire and Elkstone Staffordshire in the years previous, considering where the children were born. They were in Hartington, Ashborne, Derbyshire at the 1901 Census. Their last child had been born in Crowdecote Derbyshire.

At the 1911 Census Benjamin Nadin Senior was working in the lime and lime stone quarries and living at Pomeroy Cottage, Earl Sterndale, Buxton.

Benjamin Nadin Senior and his wife had ten children, nine of which were alive at the 1911 Census:



  1. The first child, Thomas Nadin, was christened at Earl Sterndale Derbyshire on June 25th 1876. He was born at Cronkstone Lodge, in Derbyshire. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He was at home for the 1881 Census but had left home before the 1891 Census as he was then an Agricultural Labourer in Earl Sterndale. He was working for a Gratton farmer in the rural district of Bakewell at the 1901 Census.

  2. The second child, Alice Nadin, was baptized on 19th May 1878 at Earl Sterndale. She was born at Cronkstone Lodge, in Derbyshire according to the 1881 Census. She is not found at the 1891 Census.

  3. The third child, John William Nadin was born at Cronkstone Lodge, in Derbyshire according to the 1881 Census. He was born on 9th November 1879 according to the 1939 Census. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He was a Stone tiller in a limestone quarry, which is considered heavy work according to the 1939 Census.

  4. The fourth child, Walter Nadin was baptized on the 13th of September 1881 at Christ Church, the Parish Church of Heaton Norris. His parents were then living at 128 Brucksway in Heaton Norris, county of Lancaster according to the Baptism Act. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Then Brewery man, Walter Nadin married on October 1st 1902 at the Church of St James in Buxton Derbyshire Ann Wardle, daughter of Mark Wardle, poultry dealer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

  5. The fifth child, Benjamin Nadin Junior, was born on 1st March 1884 at Cronkstone Lodge, Hartington Middle Quarter, Derbyshire, and registered on May 9th in the district of Bakewell, Derbyshire. (A Certified Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Benjamin Nadin Junior married at the registry office of the district of Plymouth on May 6th 1909 Hetty Esther Kirby daughter of deceased Edward Henry Kirby. (A Certified Copy of this Act is found further down.)

  6. The sixth child, Mary Nadin, born around 1886 according to the 1891 Census.

  7. The seventh child, Sarah Ellen Nadin was born on January 4th 1887 according to the 1939 Census. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Sarah Ellen Nadin married at the Parish Church of Earl Sterndale Derbyshire on December 28th 1905 Hugh Ernest Cope, wheelright, son of Charles Cope, joiner. Her brother Walter Nadin and her sisters Alice Nadin and Mary Nadin signed the register. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Her husband, Hugh Ernest Cope, was born on March 21st 1885, and was a Farmer and a Wheelright according to the 1939 Census.

  8. The eight child, Harry Nadin was born on April 28th 1888 according to the 1939 Census. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

    Then a Quarry man, Harry Nadin married at the Parish Church of Earl Sterndale Derbyshire on May 28th 1913 Ada Heathcote, daughter of John Heathcote, quarry manager. He was a lime burner, which is considered heavy work, at the 1939 Census.

  9. The ninth child, Ada Nadin, was June 21st 1895 according to the 1939 Census. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) born around 1895 according to the 1901 Census and 1911 Census; she had recently married Levi Wilcox according to the 1911 Census. Ada Nadin Wilcox was a widow at the time of the 1939 Census.
