Family of Jeremiah Poyfair
Jeremiah Poyfair, US Immigrant, and his Family

Jeremiah Poyfair, US Immigrant and great-great-grandfather of Shirley Poyfair

Jérémie Payfer, US immigrant, was the son of Louis Payfer and Marie Josephe Robineau Desmoulins who stayed in Lower Canada. For more on the family of Louis Payfer, press HERE.

He was born in the Parish of Sainte Geneviève de Pierrefonds, Lower Canada (Québec) on 22 September 1801 and was baptized the next day. His God-Father was Jérôme Dehêtre; his God-Mother, Marguerite Paiement.

Jérémie Payfer married Ellen Flynn, also a US immigrant, who was born in County Cork, Ireland circa 1815. She died January 3rd 1885 on Spring Street, in Lockport, Niagara County, New York State. She was buried in the Lockport Cold Spring Cemetery.

At one point, his Family name "Payfer" was anglicized by transliteration to "Poyfair" and "Jérémie" was translated to "Jeremiah", its English equivalent. So will we call him from now on.

According to his citizenship bid, he first entered the US from Canada on August 12th, 1817; he applied for US Citizenship in Lockport, Niagara County, State of New York, on October 20th, 1844. He became a US Citizen on 16th October 1846. For a scanned copy of three documents on this, press HERE.

Jeremiah and Ellen had eleven children:

  4. Ellen Flynn Poyfair, born 1838, who married George Brown and had died by 1885, as she is not mentionned as a surviving child at her mother's death;

  11. Chloe Poyfair, who died at age 2.

Jeremiah Poyfair died circa 1857. His widow Ellen married Augustus Baldwin, born in Connecticut circa 1797 but by then a citizen of Lockport.

Note: other Poyfairs/Payfairs mentionned at the 1880 US Census

It might be interesting to note that there are two other Poyfair Families mentionned in the 1880 US Census; both are living in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, in Iowa State. They are the families of Case Poyfair and that of Joseph Poyfair, both born in Canada of Canadian parents:

  2. For more on the family of Joseph Poyfair, press HERE

There is also a James Payfair, born of a Canadian father and an Irish mother. For more on the family of James Payfair, press HERE.

One also finds in the 1880 US Census a Mary Poyfair, who is working as a House Maid for a Romaine Barnes, a farmer, in Lockport, Niagara County, New York State. Her employer's family was from New York State. Mary, who was 15 at the time, was also born in New York State.
