Léonard Éthier, pionneer et great-grand-father of Marie Catherine Éthier

Léonard Éthier, pionneer, was born circa 1643 at Saint-Martial de Manot, in the Bishopric of Angoulême, in Angoumois. He was the son of Étienne Éthier and de Marguerite Sabelle who stayed in France. His brother François Éthier also became pionneer.

Léonard married in Montréal on 22 September 1670 the pionneer et fille du Roy ("daughter of the King") Élisabeth Godillon, daughter of Nicolas Godillon and of Marie Boulet who remained in France. Were present: Gille Lauzon, churchwarden, Pierre Caillet, master tailor, Jean Coron et André Carrier. Father Gilles Pérot, parish priest, officiated.

Élisabeth was born on 4 February 1649 in the parish of Saint-Nicolas, at Blois, in Orléanais.

Léonard and Élisabeth had eight children who married:

1. Élisabeth Isabelle Éthier, baptised on 2 February 1673 in Montréal, married in Lachenaie on 2 March 1688 with Louis Forget Dépatie and died in Lachenaie on 26 May 1743;
2. François Éthier, baptized in Montréal on 23 October 1674, married in Varennes on 23 November 1701 with Marguerite Marie Milot Laval and buried on 13 November 1738 in Repentigny;
3. Anne Marie Jeanne Éthier, baptized in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 15 mars 1676, married in Lachenaie on 17 April 1697 with Pierre Lalonge Gascon Bertrand and buried on 13 June 1713 in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus);
4. André Éthier, baptized in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 6 March 1678, married in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 24 April 1704 with Anne Perron Suire and buried in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 1st November 1708;
5. Marguerite Éthier, born in Repentigny on 24 December 1679, married in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 23 February 1705 with Charles Labelle and buried in Sainte-Rose on 26 November 1756;
6. René Éthier, born in Repentigny on 7 July 1682, married in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 3 May 1706 with Marie Madeleine Régéas Laprade and died in Lanoraie on 10 August 1752;
7. Ursule Éthier, born in Québec circa 1686 and married in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 5 April 1712 with Joseph Brunet Belhumeur;
8. Joseph Éthier, born in Lachenaie on 21 June 1688, married on 28 November 1713 in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) with Marie Angélique Labelle and died in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 27 August 1741.

André Éthier, grand-father of Marie Catherine Éthier

André Éthier was the son of Léonard Éthier and Élisabeth Godillon. He was baptized in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 6 March 1678. His parents were then living in Lachenaie. His god-father and god-mother, residents of Île Jésus, were André Cyr and Isabelle Charbonneau, daughter of Olivier Charbonneau and Marie Garnier. Father Séguénot officiated. He was buried in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 1st November 1708. His occupation was given as "farmer of the seigneur of Lachenaie". Were presents: Pierre Drouillard and Jean Gariépy. Father Dechaumaux officiated.

André married on 24 avril 1704 in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) Anne Perron Suire, daughter of Daniel François Perron Suire and Louise Gargotine. The bride and groom were residents of Lachenaie. Were presents: Louis Forget Despatie, Jean Bourhis, Jean Rocheron and François Beauchamp. Anne was born in L'Ange-Gardien on 19 March 1676 and was baptized on the 22nd. Her god-father was Denis Guyon; her god-mother was Élisabeth Letarte, daughter of René Letarte and Louise Goulet. "THE CHILD'S CHRISTIAN NAME WAS FOUND IN THE MARGIN OF THE DOCUMENT." The one officiating did not sign. She died in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 20 September 1735, having buried her second husband. She was buried the next day. Were presents: Charles Aubé and Pierre Beauchamp. 3. Joseph Éthier, baptized in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 7 February 1709 and married on 9 February 1733 in Rivière-des-Prairies with Marie Catherine Lauzon.

Joseph Éthier, father of Marie Catherine Éthier

Joseph Éthier, son of André Éthier and Anne Perron Suire, was baptized in Saint-François-de-Sales (Île Jésus) on 7 February 1709 by the parish priest Buisson de Saint-Côme. His god-father and god-mother were Joseph Éthier and Barbe Beauchamp. He died on 26 March 1777 and was buried in Sainte-Geneviève de Pierrefonds on 29 March. He had been captain in the militia.

Joseph married in Rivière-des-Prairies on 9 February 1733 Marie Catherine Lauzon, daughter of Michel Lauzon and of Marie Anne Coitou Saint-Jean. The bride and groom could not sign their names. Marie Catherine was born on 13 January 1712 in Rivière-des-Prairies and was baptized on the same day. Her godfather was Paul Boulard; her god-mother, Marie Catherine Lacombe. Daniel François Perron Suire, pionneer, was born on 25 November 1638. Illegitimate, he was baptized in the Calvinist Temple of Dompierre et Bourgneuf, in Aunis.

Daniel François married in Château-Richer on 26 February 1664 the pionneer and fille du Roy Louise Gargotine, daughter of Jacques Gargotine and Françoise Pernard who remained in France. Were present: Pierre Biron, Jacques Delaroe and René Cossette Le Poitevin. Father Thomas Morel, parish priest, residing in the Côte de Beaupré, officiated.

Louise was born circa 1637 in Lajarne, in the bishopric of de La Rochelle, in Aunis.

Gilles Lauzon, pionneer, was born circa 1630 in the parish of Saint-Julien, in Caen, bishopric of Bayeux, in Normandie. He was the son of Pierre Lauzon and Anne Boivin who remained in France.

Gilles married in Montréal on 27 November 1656 the pionneer Marie Archambault, daughter of the pionneers Jacques Archambault and Françoise Toureau, then residing in Montréal. Jacques Archambault, pionneer, was born circa 1604 in Lardillière at Dompierre-sur-mer, in the bishopric of La Rochelle, in Aunis. He was the son of Antoine Archambault and Renée Ouvrard who remained in France. He was buried in Montréal on 15 February 1688. Father Étienne Guyotte, parish priest, officiated.

Jacques married in France on 24 January 1629 the future pionneer Françoise Toureau, daughter of François Toureau and Marthe Lenoir who remained in France.

Françoise was born circa 1599 in Saint-Amand-de-boixe, in the diocese of Angoulême, in Angoumois. She was buried on 9 December 1663 in Montréal. The act was not signed.

Jacques and Françoise had six children, all born in Lardillière at Dompierre-sur-mer, in the diocese of La Rochelle, in Aunis and so were all pionneers, among whom the last five married:

1. Anne Archambault, pionneer, born circa 1632, married on 3 February 1654 in Montréal with Jean Gervais and died in Montréal on 29 July 1699;
2. Jacquette Archambault, pionneer, born circa 1634, married in Québec on 28 September 1648 with Paul Chalifour and buried in Québec on 17 December 1700;
3. Marie Archambault, pionneer, born on 24 February 1636, married in Québec on 28 September 1648 with Urbain Tessier Lavigne and buried in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 16 August 1719;
4. Marie Archambault, pionneer, born circa 1638, married in Montréal on 27 November 1656 with Gilles Lauzon and buried in Montréal on 8 August 1685;
5. Laurent Archambault, pionneer, born on 10 janvier 1642, married in Montréal on 7 January 1660 with Catherine Marchand and buried in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 19 April 1730.

Jean Coitou Saint-Jean, pionneer and father of Marie Anne Coitou Saint-Jean

Jean Coitou Saint-Jean, pionneer, was the son of Pierre Coitou and Charlotte Courdaut, married in France on 10 August 1645 and buried in France. He was born on 27 August 1646 in the parish of Saint-Étienne-de-Montluc, in the diocese of Nantes, in Bretagne. He was an edge-tool maker. He died on 9 November 1726 and was buried the next day. Were present: Nicolas Sent, motary royal, Louis Vaudry, Jean Renaud, Jean Baptiste Dumay. Father Delagoudalie officiated.

Jean married in Québec before 17 March 1678 the pionneer and fille du Roy Marie Thérèse Petit, daughter of Pierre Petit and Marie Marguerite Blondeau who stayed in France and widow of Christophe Laurent Champagne, pionneer et soldier in the Regiment de Carignan, which she had married in Québec on 29 October 1669.

Marie Thérèse was born circa 1653 in the parish of Saint-Étienne-des-grès, in Paris. She was again a widow when she died in Contrecoeur on 24 May 1738 and was buried the next day. Were present: her son Mathieu Coitou and Mathurin Grégoire. Father Chardon officiated.

Jean and Marie Thérèse had eleven children. Four died in early infancy and four married:

1. Pierre Coitou Saint-Jean, born in Québec circa 1679, married in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 24 July 1713 with Marie Venne and buried in L'Assomption on 28 March 1743;
2. Mathieu Coitou Saint-Jean, born in Contrecoeur on 15 June 1681, married in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 23 November 1705 with Marie Anne Lafleur and died in Contrecoeur on 13 January 1752;
3. Marie Anne Coitou Saint-Jean, born in Contrecoeur on 12 February 1687, married in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 15 May 1702 with Michel Lauzon and buried in Rivière-des-Prairies on 22 May 1726;
4. Jacques Coitou Saint-Jean, baptized in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 11 June 1690, married in Pointe-aux-Trembles on 24 January 1718 with Marie Catherine Bricault Lamarche and buried in L'Assomption on 11 December 1748.
