Joseph Goves' Family

The family of Joseph Goves and Mary Ann Roberts, parents of Mary Hannah (Ann) Goves

Mary Ann Roberts was born on April 20th 1816 and baptized May 5th at Plympton St Mary. Her parents were Thomas Roberts and his wife Mary. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Mary Ann Roberts married Joseph Goves at the Parish of East Stonehouse 30th September 1833. We can follow her through the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901 Censuses

At the 1841 Census, the Joseph Goves family lives in the Parish or Township of Egg Buckland. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Six people live together:

  1. Joseph Goves, 25 years old and so born around 1816, Farmer, from Devon
  2. Mary Goves, 25 years old and so born around 1816, born in Devon
  3. Josias Goves, 4 years old and so born around 1847, and born in Devon
  4. Samuel Goves, 2 years of age and so born around 1849, born in Devon
  5. Robert Goves, 5 months of age and so born around 1880, born in Devon
  6. Elizabeth Roberts, 12 years of age and so born around 1829, and born in Devon.

Elizabeth Roberts must have been Mary Ann Roberts's sister.

At the 1851 Census, the Joseph Goves family lives at 13 Brownlow Street in East Stonehouse. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) Six people live together:

  1. Joseph Goves, head, married, 37 years old and so born around 1814, from East Stonehouse, Devon
  2. Mary Goves, wife, 34 years old and so born around 1817, born in Yealmpton, Devon
  3. Josias Goves, son, 14 years old and so born around 1837, going to school and born in Yealmpton, Devon
  4. Robert Goves, son, 10 years of age and so born around 1841, going to school and born in Grabtree, Devon
  5. Mary H. Goves, daughter, 7 years of age and so born around 1844, going to school and born in East Stonehouse, Devon
  6. Selina Goves, daughter, 4 years of age and so born around 1847, and born in East Stonehouse, Devon.

At the 1861 Census, the family lives at 10 Newport Street in East Stonehouse. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) The father is dead and the mother is head: Six people live together:

  1. Mary Goves, Head, widow, 44 years old and so born around 1817, shopkeeper, born in Yealmpton, Devon
  2. Josias Goves, son, 25 years old and so born around 1836, Waterman and born in Yealmpton, Devon
  3. Mary H. Goves, daughter, 17 years of age and so born around 1844, seamstress and born in East Stonehouse, Devon
  4. Selina Goves, daughter, 14 years of age and so born around 1847, going to school and born in East Stonehouse, Devon
  5. Joseph Goves, son, 7 years of age and so born around 1854, going to school and born in East Stonehouse, Devon
  6. Benjamin Anderson, lodger, mariner, 39 years of age and so born around 1822, and born in Plymouth, Devon.

At the 1871 Census, the "family" lives on Admirality Street in East Stonehouse. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) It is Benjamin Anderson who is head, and Mary Goves is now Mary Anderson.   1. Benjamin Anderson, Head, married, 50 years old and so born around 1821, Master Mariner, born in Plymouth, Devon
  2. Mary Anderson, married, 50 years old andso born around 1821, born in Plymouth, Devon
  3. Joseph Goves, 17 years old and so born around 1854, apprentice boat builder.

The Andersons were not found at the 1881 Census.

At the 1891 Census, the "family" lives on Durnford (?) Street in East Stonehouse. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) It is made of Benjamin Anderson and Mary Anderson, as well as two grand-daughters Charlotte Briggs and Eliza Briggs For the Family of William Briggs Junior and Mary Ann (Hannah) Goves, press HERE. .

So we have:

  1. Benjamin Anderson, Head, married, 69 years old and so born around 1822, Contractor, born in Plymouth, Devon
  2. Mary Anderson, married, 74 years old and so born around 1817, born in Yealmpton, Devon
  3. Charlotte Briggs, grand-daughter, 26 years old and so born around 1865, born in Plymouth, Devon.
  4. Eliza Briggs, grand-daughter, 18 years old ands so born around 1873, born in Plymouth, Devon.

At the 1901 Census, the "family" lives at Rosen Villa(?) in East Stonehouse. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) It is made of Mary Anderson, head, a couple and two children, all Goves. Among them we find Joseph Goves, Mary Anderson's child by her first marriage, his wife and their two children. So we have :

  1. Mary Anderson, head, widow, 84 years old and so born around 1817, born in Yealmpton, Devon
  2. Joseph Goves, "son-in-law", married, 49 years old and so born around 1852, bargeman, born in Plymouth, Devon.
  3. Ellen Goves, "daughter", married, 47 years old and so born around 1854, born in Plymouth, Devon.
  4. Benjamin Goves, grand-son, single, 17 years old and so born around 1884, bargeman, born in Plymouth, Devon.
  5. Joseph Goves, grand-son, single, 13 years old and so born around 1888, born in Plymouth, Devon.

TO SUM UP: The family of Joseph Goves and Mary Ann Roberts

Mary Ann Roberts, daughter of Thomas Roberts and his wife Mary, was born on April 20th 1816 and baptized May 5th at Plympton St Mary.(A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Mary Ann Roberts married Joseph W. Goves at the Parish of East Stonehouse 30th September 1833. They had six children:

  1. Josias Paul Goves, baptized on November 20th 1836 in Yealmpton, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He married on October 7th 1863 Susan Strong. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He is not found at any Census in Britain.

  2. Samuel Goves, born 1839 in Devon according to the 1841 Census and not found in the 1851 Census. He died in the 2nd quarter of 1842 in East Stonehouse.

  3. Robert Joseph Goves born in the 1st quarter of 1841 in Plympton St Mary, Devon. He died in the 1st quarter of 1861.

  4. Mary Hannah Goves, born in the 4th quarter of 1843 in East Stonehouse, Devon. She married in the 4th quarter of 1864 William Briggs in Stoke Damerel. For the Family of Mary Hannah Goves and William Briggs Junior, press HERE.

  5. Selina Ann Brooks Goves, born the 3rd quarter of 1846 in East Stonehouse, Devon. She disappears after the 1861 Census. Of course, she could have married before the 1871 Census, as she would have been 25 years of age.

  6. Joseph Goves born in 1854 in East Stonehouse, Devon according to the 1861 Census. He married in the 2nd quarter of 1876 Ellen Shepherd. At the 1901 Census, they are living with his mother Mary Ann Roberts who is widowed for the second time, first from Joseph Goves and then from Benjamin Anderson. They have two children: Benjamin Anderson Goves, 17 years old and so born around 1884; and Joseph Emmanuel Goves, born in Stoke Damerel in the 3rd quarter of 1887. Those two are found at the 1911 Census. Benjamin Anderson Goves is single and a bargeman. His brother Joseph Emmanuel Goves has beem married for 3 years. He has a daughter called Louisa Mary Goves, one year old and so born around 1910 and a son called Joseph Emmanuel Goves, one month old. He is also a bargeman. His wife is 19 years of age and so born in 1892. Her maiden name was Louisa Mary Marguerite Maher. They had married in the first quarter of 1908.

  • Information from the Baptism Certificates of four of the children of Edward Kirby

    The Baptism Certificate of Triposa Kezia Anderson Kirby states that she was baptized in the Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel of Plymouth, in Devon in the year 1881 on the 9th December. She was born February 22nd 1879. Her parents were Edward Thomas and Mary Hannah Kirby. They lived at 4 Barrack Place, Stonehouse. Another child living at the same address was baptized at the same time. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)



    The Baptism Certificate of James Edward Kirby states that he was baptized in the Parish of St James, Devonport, in Devon in the year 1884 on the 8th May. He was born on April 29th 1884. Her parents were Edward Thomas and Mary Hannah Kirby. They lived at 3 Tamar Street. The father was a Master Mariner. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)


    The Baptism Certificate of Hetty Hester Kirby states that she was baptized in the Parish of St James, Devonport, in Devon in the year 1886 on the 23rd September. She was born on August 28th 1886. Her parents were Edward and Mary Ann Kirby. They lived at 3 Tamar Street. The father was a labourer in Her Majesty's Dockyard. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)


    The Baptism Certificate of Tryphena Kerenhapperch Goves Kirby states that she was baptized in the Parish of St James, Devonport, in Devon in the year 1888 on the 16th February. She was born on February 3rd 1888. Her parents were Edward and Mary Hannah Kirby. They lived at 3 Tamar Street. The father was a Merchant Seaman. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

Northamptonshire County Council Kezia Anderson: Daughter of Robert and Amelia Bowles, both born 1825; he is a Baptist Minister; Kezia was born in 1857 and was a widow. She had two children: William Albert Anderson, born in 1883 and Elenor Consrance Anderson, born in 1886. Keren Happuch Eliza Geaves: born 1871; daughter of John Edward Geaves; baptized as Kerenkaren Eliza on October 8 1871 Isabella Robinson Kirby: birth 3rd Quarter of 1876, Plymouth Her Mother's maiden name: Goves she married in 4th Quarter of 1896 in Stoke Damerel Richard James Norrish, born in 1872 When Mary Hannah Goves was born in 1844 in Stonehouse, Devon, England, her father, Joseph Warren Goves, was 33, and her mother, Mary Roberts, was 27. She married William Briggs in 1864 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. She then married William Edward Kirby and they had six children together. She died in July 1901 in Plymouth, Devon, England, at the age of 57. Mary Hannah Goves was born in 1844 in Stonehouse, Devon, England, to Mary Roberts, age 27, and Joseph Warren Goves, age 33. Her sister Salina Goves was born in 1847 in Stonehouse, Devon, England, when Mary Hannah Goves was 3 years old. Mary Hannah Goves lived in Stonehouse, Devon, England, in 1851. Her father Joseph Warren Goves, born 1811, passed away in 1853 in Stonehouse, Devon, England, at the age of 42. Her half-brother Joseph was born in 1854 in Stonehouse, Devon, England, when Mary Hannah Goves was 10 years old. Mary Hannah Goves lived in Stonehouse, Devon, England, in 1861. Mary Hannah Goves married William Briggs (born 1838, died 1872) in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England, in 1864 when she was 20 years old. Her husband William Briggs passed away in 1872 at the age of 34.
