The William Briggs

The family of William Briggs Senior and his wife Elizabeth, parents of William Briggs Junior, first husband of Mary Hannah (Ann) Goves

The first husband of Mary Hannah (Ann) Goves was William Briggs Junior. They had married in the Fourth Quarter of 1864 in the District of Stoke Damerel, in the County of Devon. At the 1841 Census, William Briggs Senior is married. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) His wife is Elisabeth and they have a son, William Briggs Junior:

  1. William Briggs Senior, 24 years of age and so born around 1817, fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, 21 years of age and so born around 1820
  3. William Briggs Junior, 3 years of age and so born around 1838.



The William Briggs Senior Family Entry at the 1841 Census:






At the 1851 Census, William Briggs Senior Family has four chidren in all. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Senior, head, married, 33 years of age and so born around 1818, fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, wife, 33 years of age and so born around 1818
  3. William Briggs Junior, son, 13 years of age and so born around 1838, fisherman
  4. Mary Briggs, daughter, 9 years of age and so born around 1842
  5. Thomas Briggs, son, 6 years of age and so born around 1845
  6. Samuel Briggs, son, 2 years of age and so born around 1849.

At the 1861 Census, William Briggs Senior Family has five chidren at home in all and a lodger. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Senior, head, married, 42 years of age and so born around 1819, fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, wife, 41 years of age and so born around 1820
  3. William Griffits, lodger, 29 years of age and so born around 1832, fisherman
  4. Mary Ann Briggs, daughter, 19 years of age and so born around 1842
  5. Samuel Briggs, son, 12 years of age and so born around 1849.
  6. Elisabeth Briggs, daughter, 8 years of age and so born around 1853
  7. Sarah Briggs, daughter, 3 years of age and so born around 1858
  8. David Briggs, son, 1 year of age and so born around 1860.



The William Briggs Senior Family Entry at the 1861 Census:






At the 1871 Census, William Briggs Senior Family has four chidren at home in all and two lodgers. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Senior, head, married, 52 years of age and so born around 1819, fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, wife, 52 years of age and so born around 1819
  3. Elisabeth Briggs, daughter, 18 years of age and so born around 1853
  4. Sarah Briggs, daughter, 13 years of age and so born around 1858, at school
  5. Emmeline Briggs, daughter, 9 years of age and so born around 1862, at school
  6. William Griffits, boarder, 38 years of age and so born around 1833, fisherman
  7. William ??, boarder, 17 years of age and so born around 1854, fisherman.

At the 1881 Census, William Briggs Senior "Family" has six people in all. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Senior, head, married, 62 years of age and so born around 1819, fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, wife, 61 years of age and so born around 1820
  3. Elisabeth Briggs, daughter, 27 years of age and so born around 1854
  4. Emmeline Briggs, daughter, 19 years of age and so born around 1862
  5. Charlotte Briggs, grand-daughter, 15 years of age and so born around 1866
  6. William Griffits, boarder, 49 years of age and so born around 1832.

At the 1891 Census, William Briggs Senior Family has three people in all. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Senior, head, married, 72 years of age and so born around 1819, retired fisherman
  2. Elisabeth Briggs, wife, 72 years of age and so born around 1819, fishmonger
  3. Elisabeth Briggs, daughter, 39 years of age and so born around 1852.

TO SUM UP: The family of William Briggs Senior and his wife Elizabeth Griffiths, parents of William Briggs Junior

William Briggs Senior was baptized as William Thomas Julian Briggs on the 2nd of February 1819, the son of William Briggs, farmer. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

He had married Elizabeth Griffiths in the 4th quarter of 1838 in East Stonehouse, Devon. Elizabeth Griffiths was baptized on the 11th June 1820 at the Church of Saint Andrew, Plymouth, daughter of William Griffiths, a seaman. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)

He was still alive and married to his wife at the 1891 Census, but this is his last. It seems that it is his death at age 76 years which is registered in the second quarter of 1895. It also seems that his wife's death at age 78 years was registered in the third quarter of 1900.

Their children were:

  1. William Briggs Junior, born around 1838; he married Mary Hannah Goves in the 4th quarter of 1864. For their Family, press HERE. .
  2. Mary Ann Griffiths Briggs, whose birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1842. She married William Stokes on December 25th 1866 in the Parish of St. Andrew, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  3. Thomas John Briggs, born on May 23rd 1844 and baptized on June 7th 1844 at the Church of Saint Andrew, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He died age 41 years on the 4th quarter of 1885.
  4. Samuel Briggs, born on October 28th 1848 and baptized on November 10th 1848 at the Church of Saint Andrew, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He married in the 2nd quarter of 1870 Elizabeth Hockridge. For their Family, press HERE. .
  5. Elizabeth Ann Briggs, born on May 24th 1853 and baptized on June 8th 1853 at the Church of Saint Andrew, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) It might be her death that was registered in the 4th quarter of 1902 at age 51 years.
  6. Sarah Jane Briggs, whose birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1858. She married in the 2nd quarter of 1877 William Brooks.
  7. David John Briggs, whose birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1860 and whose mother's maiden name was Griffiths. He was buried aged 15 months on the 24th of June 1861 in Plymouth.
  8. Emmeline Briggs whose birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1861. She married on the 21st of February 1891 in the parish of St Saviours Alfred Henry Coobes.

She married again in the third quarter of 1875. Her new spouse was Edward Kirby. She did not keep with her the children from her first marriage: they were placed here and there or disappeared, as we shall see. At the 1871 Census, William Briggs Junior Family has three chidren at home. Everyone was born in Plymouth, Devon except the wife, who was born in Stonehouse, Devon. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) We have:

  1. William Briggs Junior, head, married, 32 years of age and so born around 1839, fisherman
  2. Anne Briggs, wife, married, 28 years of age and so born around 1843
  3. Mary Ann Briggs, daughter, 8 years of age and so born around 1863, at school
  4. Charlotte Briggs, daughter, 6 years of age and so born around 1865, at school
  5. William Briggs, son, 3 years of age and so born around 1868
  6. David Briggs, son, 2 months of age and so born around 1871. He died in the first quarter of 1872.

We have seen that at the 1881 Census, Charlotte Briggs was living with William Briggs Senior's family. At the 1891 Census, Charlotte Briggs, then 26 years of age, and a sister Eliza Briggs, then 18 years old, were living with their mother's mother and her second husband Benjamin Anderson. TO SUM UP: The children of William Briggs Junior and his wife Hannah Goves

William Briggs Junior and Hannah Goves had five children between the time of their marriage in the fourth quarter of 1864 and her second marriage in the third quarter of 1875:

  1. Mary Ann Briggs who was born around 1863. She is found in the 1871 Census when she is living with her parents. She is a domestic servant at the 1881 Census.
  2. Charlotte Briggs who was born around 1865. She is found in the 1871 Census when she is living with her parents. She was living with her paternal grand-father's family for the 1881 Census as we have seen. At the 1891 Census, she was living with her sister Eliza Briggs at their maternal grand-mother Mary Ann Anderson, then wife of Benjamin Anderson, who had been the widow of Joseph Goves and the mother of Hannah Goves who had been the widow of William Briggs Junior before becoming the wife of Edward Kirby.   3. William Edwin Briggs, born on April 12th 1868 and baptized on May 1st 1869 at Holy Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) He is found in the 1871 Census when he is living with his parents.
  4. David Briggs who was born around 1871 but after the census. He died in the first quarter of 1872.
  5. Eliza Blanche Briggs who was born on February 24th 1873 and baptized on March 14th 1873 in Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) At the 1891 Census, she was living with her sister Charlotte Briggs at their maternal grand-mother Mary Ann Anderson, then wife of Benjamin Anderson, who had been the widow of Joseph Goves and the mother of Hannah Goves who had been the widow of William Briggs Junior before becoming the wife of Edward Kirby.

The family of Samuel Briggs

Samuel Briggs married in the 2nd quarter of 1870 Elizabeth Hockridge. They had 10 children, 8 of whom were still alive according to their statement in the 1911 Census. They are found in three censuses: 1891, 1901, and 1911. (A Copy of these Acts is found further down.) So their children are:

  1. Mary Emmeline Briggs was born on November 2nd 1869 and baptized on November 18th 1869 at St. Peter Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  2. Sarah Elizabeth Briggs was born around 1874. She married on December 25th 1901 Jambez Glanville at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  3. Samuel Thomas Briggs was born on August 21st 1876 and baptized on September 1st 1876 at Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) A Petty Officer on H.M.S. Vivid, he married at the age of 33 years Elaine Mary Lewis, 23 years of age, on October 23rd 1910 at the Church of St. Peter, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  4. Thomas Henry Briggs was born on April 12th 1878 and baptized at Holy Trinity Church, Plymouth, on April 26th 1878. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  5. William Frederick Briggs was born on March 23rd 1880 and baptized on April 6th 1880 at Holy Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  6. Emily Florence Briggs was born on December 29th 1881 and baptized on January 13th 1882 in Holy Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) She married Jeremiah Counly on October 25th 1903 in Trinity Church, Plymouth. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  7. Edith Briggs was born on March 8th 1884 and baptized on March 21st 1884. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) She married in Holy Trinity Church, Plymouth, on June 4th 1906 Frederick John Parnell, a widower. (A Copy of this Act is found further down.)
  8. Maud Briggs, born around 1885
  9. Kitty Briggs, born around 1887
  10. Rosina Jane Briggs was born on April 17th 1889 and baptized on April 30th 1889 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Plymouth, (A Copy of this Act is found further down.) and who married at Eggbuckland, Devon, on September 23rd 1908 John Henry Elliott.
