George John Poyfair and his Family

George John Poyfair, son of Jeremiah Poyfair and Ellen Flynn, was born in Vermont circa 1833. He died on 24 November 1905 on West Avenue, Lockport, Niagara County, State of New York.

George was mustered as a private on 22 May 1861 at Lockport into Company C of the 28th New York Infantry Regiment. He was promoted Corporal on 11 August 1861. He was discharged because of disability on 3 December 1862 at Sandy Honk, Maryland.

He was a resident of Market Street, near the City limits in 1863 and 1864 according to the Lockport City Directory.

George is found a widower living with his two daughters at his step-father's house at 292 Market Street in Lockport at the time of the 1880 Census. He was a machinist. For a look at that Census Report, press HERE.

According to the Census Data, both his children were born in New York State. Their mother, on the other hand, was born in Pennsylvania:

  1. Anny Poyfair, who was then 9 years of age and keeping house for her father.

  2. Alice Poyfair, who was then 7 years of age.

From this Census data, we can conclude that George had married, most probably in Lockport and certainly before 1871, a woman who was born in Pennsylvania and who had died by the time of the Census; in fact, she probably died around 1876, as the couple was having a child every other year.
