The Parents and Grand-Parents of

The Parents and Grand-Parents of Sarah Ellen Salt

Sarah Ellen Salt, as we saw, married in the Parish Church of Ashburne in the County of Derby on 6th January 1876 Benjamin Nadin. She was then of age, living at Bostern Grange Ashburne, the daughter of Joseph Salt, a farmer.

Sarah Ellen Salt found as a member of her father's family in Upper Elkstone, Stafford. (This Act is found further down.)

Her father Joseph Salt is 60 years of age and thus born around 1811. He is a farmer of 90 acres. Her mother is Alice Salt. There are four children at home:

  1. Damson Salt, 19 years old and so born around 1852.
  2. Sarah Ellen Salt, 17 years old and thus born around 1854.
  3. Walter Salt, 15years old and so born around 1856.
  4. Mary Salt, 13 years old and so born around 1858.

At the 1861 Census, we have the family of Joseph Salt, head, married, 50 years of age and thus born around 1811, Farmer of 43 acres, born in Elkstone, Staffordshire. His wife is Alice Salt, 46 years of age and thus born around 1815, born in Elkstone as their children. (This Act is found further down.)

They have seven children at home:

  1. Hannah Salt, daughter, 17 years of age, and thus born around 1844.
  2. Joseph Salt, son, 14 years of age, and thus born around 1847.
  3. Alice Salt, daughter, 11 years of age, and thus born around 1850.
  4. Samson Salt, son, 9 years of age, and thus born around 1852.
  5. Sarah E. Salt, daughter, 7 years of age, and thus born around 1854.
  6. Walter Salt, son, 5 years of age, and thus born around 1856.
  7. Mary Salt, daughter, 3 years of age, and thus born around 1858.

At the 1851 Census, we again have the family of Joseph Salt, head, married, 40 years of age and thus born around 1811, Farmer of 44 acres, born in Elkstone, Staffordshire. His wife is Alice Salt, 36 years of age. (This Act is found further down.) They have then five children at home:

  1. Harriet Salt, daughter, 13 years of age, and thus born around 1838.
  2. John Salt, son, 11 years of age, and thus born around 1840.
  3. Hannah Salt, daughter, 7 years of age, and thus born around 1844.
  4. Joseph Salt, son, 4 years of age, and thus born around 1847.

At the 1841 Census, we have Joseph Salt, 30 years of age and thus born around 1811, agricultural labourer. The head is Ellen Salt, head, 75 years of age and thus born around 1766, farmer. (This Act is found further down.)

Joseph Salt married Alice Gould on October 18, 1842, in Alstonfield, Staffordshire, England. (This Act is found further down.)

At the 1841 Census, she was working for Robert Pimlet. (This Act is found further down.)

The Censuses tell us that Joseph Salt was born in 1811 in Elkstone. We find that there is indeed a baptism on 16th August 1811 of Joseph Salt, son of George Salt and Ellen Salt. (This Act is found further down.) One can find two other children born to that couple at that place: that of George Salt, baptized on December 17th 1798 (This Act is found further down.) and Sarah Salt, baptized on December 24th 1803. (This Act is found further down.) George Salt married at Alstonfield on 17th January 1797 Ellen Fox who thus became Ellen Fox. She was 75 years old at the 1841 Census and her youngest son Joseph Fox was then working for her before he married. She was buried age 85 on December 9th 1851, which implies she was born around 1766, as the 1841 Census said.

It is possible to work out who the three children of George Salt and Ellen Fox married and who were their children. This is done further down. It has also been possible to find the Baptism Acts for the children of Joseph Salt and Alice Gould but for the two first children mentioned only in the 1851 Census, children that were said to be born in 1838 and 1840. The couple, as we know, married in 1842.

The Family of George Salt and Ellen Fox, Grand-Parents of Sarah Ellen Salt

George Salt and Ellen Fox married 17 Jan 1797 at the Parish of St Peter, Alstonefield, Stafford. (This Act is found further down.)

Among their children, we find:

  1. George Salt, baptized on December 17th, 1798. (This Act is found further down.) He married at Alstonfield Esther Lamas on 5th December 1825. (This Act is found further down.) She was 47 at the 1851 Census and so born around 1804. (This Act is found further down.) He was buried at 62 years of age on October 25th 1861. (This Act is found further down.) That couple had five children at the 1851 Census:
    1. Joseph Salt, 24 years old and thus born around 1827.
    2. Margaret Salt, 20 years old and thus born around 1831.
    3. John Salt, 13 years old and so born around 1838.
    4. Matthew Salt, 9 years old and thus born around 1842.
    5. Sarah Salt, 6 years old and thus born around 1845.
  2. Elizabeth Salt, baptized on December 24th, 1803. (This Act is found further down.) She married in Alstonfield John Kidd on 29th of May 1829. (This Act is found further down.) She was a widow by the 1851 Census, and it seems that her husband died by the last 1830s. (This Act is found further down.) [A John Kidd was buried at Elkstone on June 29th 1839 at the age of 34 and so was born around 1805, which would put him at about the same age as his widow. The couple had two children according to that Census:
    1. William Kidd, baptized on March 14th 1830 at Elkstone.
    2. John Kidd, 17 years old and so born around 1834.
  3. Joseph Salt, baptized 16 August 1811 at Elkstone and Warslow, Stafford.(This Act is found further down.) He married in Alstonfield on October 18th 1842 Alice Gould. (This Act is found further down.) Their family is found further down.
