The McDaids, ancestors of Peter McDaid, in the various Censuses in Scotland:
First, let me point out that the information available from Scotland is not good. In lots of cases, you cannot find either a Copy of an Act, let it be Birth, Marriage, Death or Census, nor, in many cases, a transcription of them. Basically, we have to work from the various Censuses. Furthermore, there were many people with the same Family Name, and so it is not easy to ascertain that we have always the right one. This being said, we at least have some certainties.
The various Censuses of Scotland permit us to reconstruct the family of the Ancestors of Peter Mc Daid in that Country from the 1851 onwards. In a way it would be better to start with the most recent census and go back in time. But I have here put the Censuses in chronological order as there are so many families to examine.
The Family of James McDaid Senior, grand-father of Peter McDaid
Peter Mc Daid's grand-father was an Irishman who settled in Scotland as a bottle blower. He was James Mc Daid Senior. He was born around 1814 and had married an Irishwoman whose Christian name was Mary and who was born around 1819. As his eldest was born around 1845, he had to be married by then. His Marriage Act was not found, neither any record of the birth of his three children in Scotland. The maiden name of his wife is unknown at this time.
There is at the 1841 Census a James McDead born in Ireland around 1816. He could be our man, but there is no way to be sure. It is only from the 1851 Census that the occupation is known. At that time, our man is married with three children. He is a labour in a Bottle Work. He and his wife were born in Ireland. On top of their three children they had also three lodgers, providing extra income. By 1861, James McDaid Senior was a widower. So his wife must have died between the 1851 and 1861 Census. The lodgers had to be gone as there was no one to provide for them. By the 1881 Census, James McDaid Senior was dead. Unfortunately, we find two James McDaid Senior who were buried during that time span. Even more unfortunately, there are three Mary McDaid who died between the 1861 and 1871 Census.
Both the 1851 and 1861 Census tell us that the couple had three children, all born in Glasgow:
- James McDaid Junior, their only son, was born around 1845. He was an apprentice Bottle Blower by the 1861 Census. He got married in February 1871. (Copy of this Act is not available.) His family will follow further on.
- Mary Ann McDaid, their first daughter, was born around 1849. According to some censuses, she was born in Alloa, Stirlingshire, Scotland. She married on July 14th 1870 James McLaren in the presence of her parents. He was from Ireland. (This Act is found further down.) At the 1871 Census, she was married and living with her father, her unmarried sister and her child, as well as with her husband James McLaren, born in 1846 in Ireland. By the 1881 Census, Mary Ann McLaren had just become a widow, with five children and a niece which her late husband and her had adopted, all born in Glasgow. It is possible that her husband was the James McLaren who was buried on April 14th 1879. (This Act is found further down.) She remarried by the 1891 Census with George Crook, who was born in England. She was then Mary Ann Crook. This last union did not produce any offspring. It follows that her family was formed by:
- Mary McLaren who was born in 1870 in the Central District,Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland and whose parents were indeed James McLaren and Mary Ann McDaid. (Copy of this Act is not available.)
- James Charles McLaren who was born in 1872 in Springburn,Lanark,Scotland and whose parents were indeed James McLaren and Mary Ann McDaid. (Copy of this Act is not available.) He was living with his mother and his step-father George Crook at the 1891 Census. He was then an Apprentice Glazier. He married Ann Deighan, born in 1872 in Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, whose father was
Peter Deighan and whose mother was
Martha McCann. (This Act is not available.) By the 1901 Census, his wife and him had two children a boy and a girl, born around 1898 and 1900. He was a glazier then.
- Helen McLaren who was born in 1874 in Central District,Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland and whose parents were indeed James McLaren and Mary Ann McDaid. (Copy of this Act is not available.) She was living with her mother and her step-father George Crook at the 1891 Census. She was a Machinist.
- William McLaren who was born around 1876. He was living with his mother and his step-father George Crook at the 1891 Census. He was then an Apprentice Tinsmith.
- Jessie McLaren who was born around 1881. She was living with her mother and her step-father George Crook at the 1891 Census and the 1901 Census. She was a Machinist in an Umbrella Factory at that last time.
- Elizabeth McDade who was born in 1868. She was living with her adopted mother and her step-father at the 1891 Census. She was then a Warehouse Girl.
- Ellen Mc Daid, their second daughter, was born around 1851. At the 1871 Census, she was living with her father, unmarried and a power loom weaver. She had a child, born in 1869, called Elizabeth McDaid who was adopted by James McLaren and his wife. She married on the 18th of September 1874 James Quinn, son of James Quinn and Ann Quinn. (She is said the daughter of James McDade and Agnes McDade, which of course is incorrect in the case of the mother.) (This Act is found further down.) Her child born before her marriage was adopted by her sister, as we saw.
The Family of James McDaid Junior, father of Peter McDaid
We saw that James McDaid Junior was born around 1845 in Glasgow and was an apprentice Bottle Blower in 1861. He married Agnes McEachnie, also from Glasgow, on the 16th of February 1871. (This Act is found further down.) She was the daughter of Peter McEachnie and of Maria Francis Hay, born on the 19th of January 1850 and baptized on the 28th. (This Act is found further down.) At the 1871 Census, James McDaid Junior was a Bottle Maker who was living with his bride at 155, Parliamentary Road, Barony, Central, Lanarkshire. He was living at 80, St Mungo Street, Barony, St Rollox, Lanarkshire at the 1881 Census. He was then a Spirit Merchant. His wife had a domestic servant to help her with the running of the household as they then had three children. Like his father before him, he had a boy and then two girls. He had moved to Grafton Place, Glasgow, St Rollox, Lanarkshire at the 1891 Census and was still a Spirit Merchant.
The 1901 Census is somewhat of a puzzle for that family. On the day of the Census, his wife and his daughter Jane McDaid were not at home but were on a visit at 29, Argyle Street, at Rothesay, on the Island of Bute, northwest of Glasgow. He had become a Publican. His son Peter McDaid is said to be at home and to be his Manager. On the other hand, we also find a Peter McTait appearing out of the blue lodging elsewhere and with a very different job. Indeed he now lives at 28, Cemetery Road, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland and is a Foundery Fitter. This is the only occasion where a Peter McTait is ever found in Scotland. It seems to me that something happened to get the son out of his father's house and business, change his family name somewhat and reasonably soon after move to the Birmingham area.
The parents are not found on the 1911 Census. James Mc Daid Junior appears in the Glasgow Post Office Directory for the first time in 1876, and until 1911 at least he is a spirit merchant with his shop at 98 Glebe street. He lives in different houses: from 1876 to 1881 roughly, at 80 Mungo street; then at 2 Grafton Place and finally 32 Grafton street. There he died at the age of 77 and was buried on April 14th 1921. The burial paper does say he lived on that street. He was the owner of the plot (Number 2102). (This Act is found further down.) His parents are not found at any other census. His wife had been buried there (Plot Number 2102) aged 70 on the 31st July 1920. (This Act is found further down.)
James McDaid Junior and his wife had three children, all born in Glasgow:
- Peter McDaid was born on the 24th June 1874 in Glasgow's Central District under the name of Peter John McKechnie McDaid (Copy of this Act is unfortunately not available.) He is living at home at the 1891 Census. He is then a clerk. It is at the 1901 Census that things go wild. He is said to be still living at home and working as a Publican's Manager as his father's business is a pub. But also, and then under the name Peter McTait he lodges at 28, Cemetary Road, Falkirk, Stirlingshire and works as a Fitter in a Foundry. By the last quarter of 1903 he was living in Aston with his bride Emily Pinfold. For the rest of his life and his family,

.
- Agnes McKechnie McDaid was born around 1878. She married on 6 September 1902 James Bernard Duffie. (This Act is found further down.)
- Jane McDaid was born around 1880. She went to visit a place in a small town called Tothesay on the Island of Bute, north west of Glasgow, on the day of the Census in 1901. She went with her mother. The address was 29, Argyle Street. Who and why she went there are yet to be determined.
One thing is for sure, they were all baptized as Roman Catholics and they all seem to have married other Roman Catholics, with one exception, and he married in Aston, England.
